"Commander, we're approaching Earth. No intelligent life forms detected."

Mass Effect Joker

I am not a Star Trek geek. I'm not even a Star Wars geek. I barely know a thing about space, space travel or other planets. What I do know, is this game is a blast, and you need not know anything special to play it.

Overview

You are Commander Shepard, a member of the Alliance Military. Of all the races in the galaxy, the humans are the most looked down upon, and are still trying to prove to the Council, the galaxy's only real working body of government, that mankind is capable of not screwing things up.

The Council employs a branch of agents called Spectres, and after a while in the game, you get the feeling you're working in a cesspool, as Saren, a Spectre for the Council, goes rogue. You need proof of this, and after the Council finally believes you, they look upon you to go after Saren, and stop him. The battles are long, epic, and bring you to several different uncharted planets looking for clues as to his whereabouts.

Features

Upon putting the game into your system, you immediately get the feeling you're dealing with hi-tech, top secret space military computers. You're prompted to confirm your first name, and then it brings you to the next screens where you can elaborate on your character style (Soldier, Engineer, etc) and your military history. Pick carefully; both options you choose will have a tremendous amount to do with the story and the game.

Because of this, I would call this game an RPG. You can customize your character right off the bat, everything you say to people affects how the game works, and you and your squad generate XP (experience points) simultaneously, and can at any time view you and your squad's XP, level information, and attributes.

Classes

• Soldier1

Soldiers are combat specialists ideal for the front lines of a firefight. Soldiers begin the game trained with skills in both pistols and assault rifles, they have improved health and the ability to wear medium combat armor. As you progress through the game you can unlock assault training, skills with shotguns and sniper rifles, become able to perform first aid on yourself and party members, and wear heavy combat armor.

• Engineer

Engineers are tech specialists. Using the holographic OmniTool they can decrypt security systems, repair and/or modify technical equipment, disrupt enemy weapons or shields and heal their party. Even though they begin the game with only pistols and the OmniTool, engineers can unlock the ability to wear light armor and to reverse engineer enemy technology. They can also learn to put up protective shields and to heal the party.

• Adept

Adepts are biotic specialists. Starting out equipped with pistols and light armor, the true strength of the adept is through the upgradeable implants that give them their biotic powers. These powers can be used to lift or throw objects, shield the party and disable or destroy enemies.

Combat

Mass Effect has a truly revolutionized combat system. The game does not have a first person view option, and that may take some getting used to for FPS gamers, but it makes up for it. Combat is quick, incredibly flexible, and with a little practice at it, you can be very effective at making use of any cover you can, including boxes on the floor or split walls, peeking around corners, and even sneaking is to your advantage.

Every character has the power to gain Abilities as the game goes on. Common ones, for the Soldier, are Shield Boost, Adrenaline Burst, and Overkill. These 3 Abilities alone got me through some pretty tough battles. As the game progresses, you'll be able to hold numerous Abilities and they're easily accessible in combat by pressing LB and using the LS to select which Ability you'd like.

I love the attribute system. As you progress throughout the game, you will earn XP, or experience points. You will pick up XP for things you examine by pressing A, for talking to people, completing missions, and of course, gunning down bad guys. When you do level up, it's simple to turn your XP into attribute points. You can choose how many points you want to go where, and once you get farther along in, say, First Aid, a new Category will open up called Electronics, so you can train in Electronics and become good at hacking, opening up electronically sealed crates, and eventually repairing your Mako (your 6-wheeled land rover designed for exploring uncharted planets).

Squad-Based Action

Squad action in this game is also revolutionary. I don't remember any game where it's easier to control your squad members, heal them, equip weapons on the fly, or assign attribute points. Yes, you will need to assign attribute points from leveling up not only to your character, but your two squad members. Don't forget when you level up, assign attribute points to the rest of your squad, too! Or else you'll forget about them, and when you're still alive in heated gun fights and they're blown up laying on the ground, you'll realize you're more experienced than them. Wink

Everything you do in this game not only affects you, but your squad. When the game says you collected 200 XP, it means that all squad members got 200 XP.

Just as you can control your squad's Abilities, you can also quickly equip weapons the same way you'd do Abilities. Just press RB, and using LS, select which weapon you'd like to equip. You'll notice that pressing RB or LB brings up not only yourself, but your other two squad members. This makes it super simple to equip different weapons on your squad members in a matter of seconds.

Note: Make sure you and your squad members are experienced using the weapon you've selected, or else you will not be accurate and won't kill anything.

The Bottom Line

Thanks Max Smile

Yeah its only 3rd person but I strongly recommend buying it: it just took a price hit down to 30 bucks, at least where I live.

Yeah I got used to it really quick. I think just because the entire game is so good, so that makes it easier. I'm used to Oblivion and CoD 4, which are both first-person view games.

Well... that certainly is a nice review. Nice attention to detail. You should submit it with your resume to 1up.com and become a game reviewer.

I appreciate the compliment Smile

I want us to become that reliable source for reviews that people look to. Everybody has their own "reliable source" they look to for game reviews and such... it'd be great to get a large database of reviews written.

Lmao. Yeah it did.

I'm not expecting to get a team of 13 extremely skilled review writers Wink

If I had the time, I'd sit here all day and write review after review

Lol I'm not forcing anybody to write reviews. I personally don't think I'm that great at it.. I just give my honest opinion about the game, and a brief description of what the game is about, what I liked and didn't like. I like to make it look good with pictures that are relevant to what I'm talking about. Then, I give the game a score from 1-10. I just wish I had more TIME Neutral
